A leading design-driven architecture practice is seeking a Senior Project Architect to join its San Diego team. This is an opportunity for a California-licensed Architect with 10+ years of experience to take a senior technical and design leadership role across complex projects, while mentoring teams and contributing to the firm's broader design and professional initiatives.
The Role
The Senior Project Architect will guide design teams through the technical and design development of multiple projects or large, complex assignments. This individual will play a key role in technical oversight, quality control, risk management, consultant coordination, and construction documentation, while working closely with Principals, Project Managers, and Project Designers.
Key Responsibilities

Provide senior technical and design leadership across multiple projects or large, complex assignments

Lead and mentor project teams, delegate responsibilities, and provide guidance to junior staff

Coordinate large consultant teams and multidisciplinary project stakeholders

Develop and review construction documents, production drawings, specifications, and technical details

Ensure projects meet design intent, technical standards, building codes, and quality-control requirements

Lead technical problem-solving and design refinement throughout project delivery

Oversee risk management and conduct project check-set reviews

Coordinate with planning, building, fire, and other authorities having jurisdiction

Participate in client meetings, project presentations, approvals, and permitting

Conduct site observations and prepare field reports

Manage RFIs, change orders, proposal requests, revisions, and other technical documentation through construction

Lead project close-out activities, including punch lists and certificates of occupancy
-
Support staffing, fee estimating, scheduling, and payment review

Contribute to marketing efforts, interviews, project narratives, and thought leadership initiatives

Participate in professional organizations, industry events, and continuing education

Help maintain and strengthen the firm's reputation as a design-driven practice
Requirements

10+ years of professional architecture experience

Minimum 5 years of experience as a Project Architect

Architecture license required; California license preferred

Strong experience with complex project design and documentation

Extensive construction documentation and construction administration experience

Strong knowledge of building materials, specifications, construction techniques, and building codes

Experience coordinating with governmental agencies and multidisciplinary consultants

Proven track record of quality control and technical oversight

Strong leadership, communication, and mentoring skills

Ability to manage multiple projects, teams, and competing priorities

Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino or SketchUp, and Microsoft Office

Experience with Enscape, Twinmotion, 3D Studio Max, or similar rendering software preferred

LEED AP or strong knowledge of sustainable practices is a plus

Graduate degree in Architecture or equivalent experience preferred
